Does your old building have you paying an enormous energy bill every month?

Is your utility bill larger than you think it should be?

Your home or building may be under-insulated, which results in the inside air escaping through the cracks and gaps in your existing insulation and the outside air coming in. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that only 20% of homes built prior to 1980 are well insulated. And, because building codes did not require insulation before the mid-1970s, many older homes and buildings have no insulation at all. This applies also to commercial and multifamily buildings, most of which have endured too many years of weathering to perform at levels anywhere close to energy codes or their owner’s satisfaction. Whether you are a homeowner or property manager, CPBS’ Exterior Energy Retrofit can help you decrease your high energy bills permanently and increase your and your client’s bottom lines.

What is an Exterior Energy Retrofit?

CPBS’ Exterior Energy Retrofit consists of new batt insulation, advanced C-SIS Sheathing System, upgraded, high performance composite framed windows and doors and an optimized HVAC system design. Only by combining all of these elements can you create the tight building envelope and energy savings you desire.

Through each day of the retrofit, the process is the same.  The first half of the day is the demolition phase and the second half will be spent rebuilding. At the end of each day, no part of your home is left completely exposed.  Using this method allows you to continue with your day to day life without worry for your home’s vulnerability or your safety. When the entire exterior envelope is complete, the new finish materials of your choice are installed. This entire retrofit process can be accomplished in just a matter of a few weeks.

Construction Process:

  • Existing finish materials, such as siding or stucco, are removed from your home’s exterior walls as well as any sheathing, house wrap and insulation.
  • Penetrations in the drywall and through framing members are tightly sealed.
  • High performance composite framed windows and doors replace the old, air and moisture leaking windows and doors.
  • 3-1/2” R-15 batt insulation is installed in between exposed studs which when coupled with the 1-1/8″ thick, R-6 insulating C-SIS and traditionally framed 2 x 4 wall, achieves an R-21 wall without the added expense of 6″ stud framing.
  • C-SIS Sheathing is attached directly to the framing members using Screw Products corrosion resistant 2-3/4” Bronze Star Drive fasteners.
  • The small 1/8” gap between the C-SIS foam is filled with 3M’s Venture Tape VG 308 Double-Sided Foam Tape.
  • The gap between each FRT skin of the C-SIS is then filled with 3M’s 4000UV adhesive sealant that bonds the C-SIS skins together.
  • The complete joint is then covered with 3M’s 8067 All Weather Flashing Tape. This flashing tape is used around all wall penetrations.
  • New siding or Stuc-O-Flex elastomeric acrylic stucco is then installed to finish the exterior

The C-SIS Sheathing System creates an extremely air tight building envelope which dramatically reduces the required HVAC cooling load for your new building however properly designed fresh air ventilation is required to maintain indoor air quality. CPBS will coordinate the analysis of the required HVAC information to optimize the design of a system with sufficient fresh air ventilation to ensure occupant comfort and indoor air quality. CPBS will also provide assistance in developing the RESNET/Energy Star, State and Local Energy Certificates required as part of the building permit process.

CPBS will help every client plan and complete their exterior energy retrofits including connecting interested homeowners with modern lending programs such as HUD’s PowerSaver Home Energy Retrofit Loan program. Backed by the Federal Housing Administration, the FHA PowerSaver loan offers borrowers low-cost loans up to $25,000 to make energy saving improvements to their homes. Additionally, FHA’s Energy Efficient Mortgage program (EEM) helps homebuyers or homeowners save money on utility bills by enabling them to finance the cost of adding energy efficiency features to new or existing housing as part of their FHA insured home purchase or refinancing mortgage.

Our Exterior Energy Retrofit offers homeowners and building owners a more comprehensive system that delivers a long term return on investment unlike any other retrofit.
